ABOUT: The Choirs

The vocal music program at Alameda International Jr/Sr High school is a growing and dynamic one.  Students in the high school can participate in as many as four curricular choirs during the school day, and one curricular choir is currently available to students in 7th and 8th grades.  The performing ensembles participate in free public concerts at the school every quarter, and present a wide array of musical styles spanning from Renaissance motets to jazz, choral standards to Broadway favorites, multicultural world music to pop tunes.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR

Non-auditioned performing ensemble available for all 7th and 8th grade students.  Beginners to advanced singers welcomed, this choir builds vocal technique, choral singing concepts, music literacy and cultural sensitivity and understanding of a wide array of musical styles.  The MS choir regularly performs music in 2- and 3-parts.  Includes a low-stakes festival experience in the spring semester.

MIXED CHOIR

Non-auditioned performing ensemble available for all 9-12th grade students.  No prior experience necessary.  Beginners to advanced singers welcomed, this choir builds vocal technique, choral singing concepts, music literacy and cultural sensitivity and understanding of a wide array of musical styles.  The Mixed Choir regularly performs music in 3- and 4-parts. Includes two low-stakes festival experiences during the year.

MEN'S CHOIR

All-male or male-identifying choral ensemble available to students in 9-12th grade. Teacher recommendation required, prior experience a plus but not necessary.  Students in men's choir will benefit from participating in a secondary mixed ensemble, but will gain a solid foundation of vocal and choral singing technique in this class. Additional areas of focus include showmanship and expression, community, and exposure to an eclectic assortment of music.  One designated festival for Men's Choir takes place every September at Ralston Valley High School in Arvada, in addition to quarterly evening concerts.

LYRICS

Auditioned* intermediate-advanced choir available for qualified female or female-identifying students in grades 9-12.  This choir builds upon the students' existing foundation of vocal and choral techniques and music literacy to perform music at a higher level of mastery.  Students become more independent and proficient in the music learning process, and perform music with increased difficulty from Middle School or Mixed Choir. Lyrics performs treble music arrangements in 3- and 4-parts, and participates in a JEFFCO-sponsored festival annually.  This choir will also participate in competitive festivals in the coming years.

MADRIGALS

Auditioned* advanced choir of mixed voices for students in grades 9-12.  This is the premiere vocal ensemble at Alameda and is mostly comprised of 11th and 12th grade singers, but qualified underclassmen may be accepted upon a successful audition.  Similarly to Lyrics, the Madrigal Singers take their musical and vocal abilities to the next level, singing more difficult choral literature, demonstrating independence and initiative in the music-learning process, and performing at a higher level of mastery in performance. The Madrigals perform at the annual CU Madrigal Festival each fall, and will participate in competitive festivals in the coming years.  The Madrigals traditionally performs the annual Valogram fundraiser in February.

*Auditions for the two most advanced choirs take place annually in March.  Students may elect to audition at the end of the fall semester if space is available in the ensemble and in the said student's schedule.

**Students in all choirs (7-12) are invited to audition for the JEFFCO All-County Honor Choir that takes place annually in November.  Auditions will be held early in the fall semester.  Stay tuned or see Mrs. Fleming for details.

ABOUT: The Director

Adrianne Fleming has been teaching choir since 2010, beginning her career in the suburbs of Boston, MA and now leading the vocal music department in Lakewood, CO.  Prior to coming to Alameda, Mrs. Fleming served as the choral conductor and general music teacher at F. A. Day Middle School in Newton, MA, and spent four years teaching choral music at Whitcomb Middle School in Marlborough, Massachusetts to students in 4th-8th grade.

Mrs. Fleming always knew she wanted to teach music, having participated in musical theater throughout childhood, and choir and band in high school.  She realized she had a love for classical singing and a knack for teaching and earned her Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College in upstate New York.  After graduation, she moved to Massachusetts to share her love of music with her first students.  Then equipped with a Master's Degree in Music Education from Kent State University (OH), Mrs. Fleming went on to conduct 6 different choral ensembles at her middle schools, began an after school theater program at Whitcomb Middle School, earned recognition for her music direction with the F.A. Day spring musicals, served as the Assistant Director for the All-City Select Choir in Newton, and took on the Assistant Manager position for the Eastern District Honor Choir.  Her choirs performed at area festivals, earning accolades such as a silver medal at the 2014 MICCA Choral Festival.  As a private voice teacher, Mrs. Fleming's students were frequently selected as participants in MMEA Junior and Senior District Festivals, as well as All-State and All-Eastern Choirs, and they regularly performed leading roles in musical theater productions at their local high schools and with regional companies.

Now in Colorado, Mrs. Fleming is excited about the prospects of bringing pride and esteem back to the Alameda Vocal Music Program.  While working to improve the quality, exposure, and appreciation of the choir program during the school day, Mrs. Fleming is also maintaining an active performance schedule as a soloist and chorister in the Denver area.  She regularly performs with the Alpine Chorale in Arvada, CO and sings opera with several local companies in Denver and Boulder. She has additionally performed in such venues as Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center (NYC), Symphony Hall in Boston, and the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia.
